Ningbo-Zhoushan sea area lies in the coast of southeast China , on the mouth of Han-gzhou Bay , and is the position where the Yangtze River, Qiantang River and the Yong River run in the sea 。 This area is back onto the Yangtze River delta, the T-type conjunction of the Yangtze River economic belt and the eastern coastal economic belt. Its direct hinterland is one of the areas with the greatest economic vigor and potential for development, where the economic development level is the highest in China . Ningbo port and Zhoushan port adjoin, whose waterway distance is less than 3n miles.

　　Ningbo-Zhoushan sea area locates on the conjunction of the main coastal channels and the “golden waterway” of the Yangtze River . It is 130n miles north away from Wusongk-ou of Shanghai, 433n miles away from Tsingtao, 688n miles away from Qinhuangdao, 824n miles south away from Guangzhou, 476n miles away from Xiamen. Its distance of the inte-rnational air routes from Hong Kong, Keelung , Busan, Osaka and Kobe are less than 1000n miles, while its distance from the port of America , Oceania, Persian Gulf, Eastern Africa , etc. is about 5000n miles. 

　　Ningbo port and Zhoushan port both have long histories, and always are the important ports for external trade of China. There have been many rebuilding and capital overhauling since new China was founded. During the period of “mass port production in three years”in the early 70's last century, and after the reform and opening of China , there are two ti-des of port construction in Ningbo port, which cause the Ningbo port to develop fast. Along with the further development of the national economy, Ningbo port and Zhoushan port bo-th have stepped into the phase with the high speed of development since the 90's last ce-ntury. 

　　Ningbo port has experienced three main stages: first as an inland river port, then the coexistence of inland river port and estuary port, now the coexistence of inland river port, estuary port and seaport. Ningbo port is the second largest famous deep-water port next to Shanghai port in mainland China . Zhoushan port works up from a fishing port to a port paying equal attention to fishery and freightage. Zhoushan port is now one of the bases for mass bulk cargo (raw oil, mineral, coal, etc.) transfer in Yangtze River delta and the re-gions along the Yangtze River . 

　　The land communications and transportation of Ningbo port are very convenient. The railway branchs of Baisha, Hongzhen and Beilun port connect with Xiaoyong railway, and connect with national grid through Zhejiang-Jiangxi, Shanghai-Hangzhou and Xuancheng-Hangzhou railway. Main road like the national highway No. 329, Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo highway, Tongsanxian highway, etc. connect with Ningbo port, therefore, the port intercommunicates Hangzhou , Shanghai , Taizhou, Wenzhou , etc. At present time, Zhous-han can not communicates with outside through land transportation, but the on-building “Zhoushan islands connecting project” will realize that Zhoushan islands connect with Ningbo through land transportation.
